Thursday night Jimmy Kimmel said that the live sitcom he’s been planning for years is real, it’s happening and you can watch it on May 22nd from 8pm to 8:30pm. Kimmel and a celebrity guest cast will recreate classic episodes of two classic Norman Lear sitcomes: The Jeffersons, and All in the Family. Kimmel had first announced the special was in the works nearly two years ago.
Kimmel and Lear will co-host the event which will tape live in front of a studio audience. Lear, who is 96, has never stopped working.
“Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons’” is an attempt to prove that these series created in the 70’s still hold up today. Woody Harrelson is leading the All in the Family cast as Archie Bunker, with Marisa Tomai playing Edith. Ellie Kemper is taking on the rule of Gloria. Leading up The Jeffersons cast are Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes as George and Weezie. Justina Machado will play their fast talking housekeeper Florence, and Will Ferrell will play honkey neighbor Tom Willis.
Two of the most popular sitcoms of the 70’s the Jeffersons was actually a spin off of All in the Family. George and Louise were neighbors of Archie and Edith who would appear from time to time, setting off race conflict. All in the Family ran from 1971 to 1979, while the Jeffersons aired from 2975 until 1985.
Kimmel said being part of this special event is a dream come true.
